The 2016 La Brea Stakes has a lot of talent, but truthfully boils down to two horses. Lightstream enters as the 2/1 favorite, but has a slew of contenders trailing right her at heels. One of those is Enola Gray, who remains my preference to upset this Boxing Day spectacle.
Lightstream is as good of a play as any. She is 4-1-1 in six starts and is coming off a rousing victory at the Raven Run, where she blasted from 8th position to win in decisive fashion. Her closing speed is astounding, which gives her as much of an opportunity in 7 furlongs as any of the rivals here.
Despite the fever building around Lightstream, it’s hard for me to just brush Enola Gray aside. She’s coming off a very disappointing upset at the Betty Grable, where she was caught by Chao Chom who enters the 2016 La Brea at 8/1. Enola Gray is a stiff 4-2-0 in six starts and has been long touted as one of the horses to watch this year. Losing as the heavy favorite at the Betty Grable certainly dented her momentum but it hasn’t killed the potential here completely. I’m hedging on a comeback.
The actual second favorite is Finley’sluckycharm, who has earned 5/2 honors in the 2016 La Brea. But if we’re talking about bad performances in their last time out, then this filly fits the bill. Finley’sluckycharm trailed to 7th at the Rachel Alexandra but has shown well otherwise.
The remainder of the field is holding odds of 6/1 or much higher, but aren’t worth considering in my opinion. I like Constellation but not in a tight race where Lighstream and Enola Gray simply seem a head above.
