Classic Empire has emerged as the favorite according to the first round of 2017 Kentucky Derby odds. The Mark Casse trainee reinvigorated his case with a sound win in the Arkansas Derby just a short while ago. Even as the 4/1 top choice, he has his work cut out for him.
Challenging for the win at Churchill Downs will be McCraken and Always Dreaming who share 2017 Kentucky Derby odds of 5/1. McCraken was last out in the Blue Grass falling to third for his first ever loss. However, there have been astounding reports from his training that the response from the three-year-old has been nothing short of phenomenal. The competitive fire burns bright with this one.
Always Dreaming is a much different study. The winner of the Florida Derby hasn’t really been tested thoroughly because the Gulfstream event was his first ever stakes race. Beyond that, he was hand ridden to the line and wasn’t even challenged by his rivals. That could cause concern for some, but most worries have been calmed by the fact that the colt seems optimal for longer distances. He has everything in the physical and mental toolbox to win the Kentucky Derby outright.
Irish War Cry is the final favorite in the 2017 Kentucky Derby odds thanks to his win in the Wood Memorial, which resurrected his hopes after a dismal showing in the Fountain of Youth where he placed seventh. It will be about conviction for this colt, and some doubt that he has both the legs and the competitive edge to really blossom as a true champion.
The jump in the 2017 Kentucky Derby odds from the top four goes immediately to 15/1 where you find familiar names like Battle of Midway, Gormley, Girvin and Gunnevera. How you play the longshots is always up to yo. There are some fun little combinations like here worthy of a flier, like the Guttierez/O’Neill duo that won last year with Nyquist. They’re with Irap, who stunned the crowd with a Blue Grass win. The Desormeaux brothers are invested in Sonneteer, who is a massive 50/1 longshot.
The full list of contenders for this Saturday’s Kentucky Derby can be found below. It’s been a long and winding road to the Triple Crown, but we’re finally on the precipice. Time to get very, very excited.
