Danzing Candy Still Ripping at 2017 San Carlos

2017 San Carlos Stakes preview Don't lose track of Danzing Candy, the favorite in the 2017 San Carlos Stakes

Anyone remember Danzing Candy? The speedy four-year-old colt has quietly, but defiantly, begun a campaign that’s made him a horse to keep tabs on. In fact, he’s the horse to beat at the upcoming 2017 San Carlos Stakes.

Many will have fond memories of Danzing Candy ripping to a 2016 San Felipe Stakes win before placing second in the Santa Anita Derby en route to the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, the front runner couldn’t maintain his rabid pace over the length of The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports and fell all the way back to 15th after leading the way for much of the race.

He bounced back with a mid-summer swing in the 2016 Affirmed Stakes where he placed second before being shut down for the remainder of last season. This year, however, he’s come out roaring. The Bob Baffert trainee has won the Lone Star Handicap and an allowance to get off to a promising start in the second tier of Thoroughbred competition and is now a 4/5 favorite heading in to the 2017 San Carlos Stakes, where he’ll face a total field of just five rivals.

Though Danzing Candy will run out of the inside post, Baffert seems optimistic that he can gear his renewed runner to a win and set up some much needed momentum heading towards the Breeders’ Cup. “I’m trying to manage these horses the best I can. This came up and it looked like it would be a good spot, even though he’s in the No. 1 hole. But I think he’s good.”

Ransom the Moon will be the biggest threat at 5/2 in the 2017 San Carlos after winning the Kona Gold Stakes. Kobe’s Back, who finished fourth in the Kona Gold, is in at 9/2. Coastline is the longsohot with 8/1 odds of his own while Cool Cowby returns stateside after a fifth place finish in the Dubai Gold Shaheen as a 6/1 outside shot.

Though he fell off the radar while he recovered from last year’s Triple Crown season, Danzing Candy is a beloved fan favorite who has both the speed and will to lead out front and surprise many. As he matures, he’ll be an intriguing prospect to keep track of and could be a really big deal at the Patty O’Brien Stakes, which is a Breeders’ Cup qualifying event.

The shorter distance is optimal for Danzing Candy and he is a surefire play. Get in early before these odds get unattractive.
