This year’s Eclipse Award reception is set to be held at Gulfstream Park on Friday, January 20, 2017. It will also be the location of the second Jockeys and Jeans benefit auction. Auctioned off are selection stallion seasons with proceeds going towards the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. It will be held the evening following the awards reception in the walking ring area.
Last year’s first non-guaranteed sales seasons raked in over $114,000 in donated stallion seasons. There will be a fourth such fundraiser held at Parx Racing on June 3rd. The official sponsor of the event will be Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company. Fasig-Tipton will provide the auctioneer and bid spotters.
“We thank Mr. Frank Stronach and all at Gulfstream Park for this wonderful opportunity,” said Jockeys and Jeans President Barry Pearl, who also happens to be a former jockey. “I believe their generosity reflects the growing and heart-touching response within the racing community to the ongoing needs of catastrophically-injured jockeys. The fact that two competing sales companies are coming together to aid fallen riders is proof positive that within the racing industry exists a true spirit of giving.”
In the three years Jeans and Jockeys has operated, they have been able to raise almost $500,000 for disabled jockeys who suffered career-ending injuries. A group of ex-jockeys funded the organization and their motto is: “We are the lucky ones. We walked away intact, but we will never forget our brothers and sisters who did not.” You can find more information on their website, www.jockeysandjeans.com.
