Three-year-old Gunnevera will look to finally score another victory int he 2017 Tangelo Stakes this weekend. Gunnevera has experince at Gulfstream Park, having gone 1-1-1 in the Florida Derby, Fountain of Youth and Holy Bull this year. He was last run in the Preakness Stakes where he placed fifth.
Trainer Antonio Sano said, “He’s been training very well,” ahead of the 2017 Tangelo Stakes. “His condition is perfect. He’s put on more weight. He’s a very happy horse.”
Sano’s intention is to run Gunnevera in the 2017 Tangelo Stakes as an expected favorite against a field of six total horses. If all goes well, the Travers would be his next desitnation. He is certainly due for a bit of a pick-me-up.
Front Loaded will challenge from the inside post since winning an allowance at Gulfstream over one mile. He has not scored in a stakes race during his entire career and is clearly a second-tier horse.
Trainer Aubrey Maragh will submit Arrecife in to the mix in search of his maiden, but this son of Majestic Warrior has yet to secure a single win. HIs best effort was last November in an allowance where he placed second. Recently he ran third in a Gulfstream allowance over a mile.
Unbridled Holiday is a local Gulfstream product who came 8th in the Florida Derbyand is not expected to be much of a factor in the 2017 Tangelo Stakes. Same goes for Manelote who will enter as the longest shot int he field.
Last but not least is yet another Gulfstream mainstay in the form of Prince Tito, a Pioneer of the Nile offspring who last finished 5th in a Gulfstream allowance over a mile well behind Arrecife, who finished third in that race.
It’s not a stellar field but the 2017 Tangelo Stakes is the type of race that Gunnevera needs to get back in the saddle, so to speak.
The 2017 Tangelo Stakes is a 1 1/16th mile challenge which is run on a dirt track, with a purse of $100,000. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th at Gulfstream Park.
