Lady Eli Readies For Flower Bowl

Flower Bowl 2016 preview Strike Charmer looks to upset Lady Eli at the Flower Bowl this weekend

Chad Brown will send two of his best fillies to the Flower Bowl in hopes of pushing another contender in to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Sea Calisi has already earned a trip to the world championships via the Beverly D. Stakes earlier this year, and will be in action as the outside runner to begin Saturday’s race. She’ll be flanked by Lady Eli, who is coming off her first career defeat since returning from an extended absence.

Lady Eli ran second to Strike Charmer, who will also post up in the Flower Bowl, in her highly anticipated return at the Ballston Spa. It was a great effort, but a disappointing return for the superstar in the making. She is by far the strongest overall competitor in this weekend’s event, but needs to convince horse players that she’s still got it.

Sea Calisi is no slouch, and won’t yield to her stablemate in the slightest. Winner of the Beverly D Stakes and the Sheepshead Bay, the four-year old out of Ireland also came second at the New York Stakes. I wouldn’t be surprised if her and Lady Eli topped the Flower Bowl together.

That all depends, however, on what you think of Strike Charmer. She has been run six times this season and has been all over the board. She owns two wins and a second place finish, but also 5th, 6th and 8th at other outings. I’m not convinced that she’s even the third or fourth best horse in the Flower Bowl.

Rounding out the field are Sentiero Italia, who placed 3rd at the Ballston, along with Ame Bleue and Itsonlyactingdad who are the expected longshots.
