Pumpkin Pie Stakes Closes Fall Meet at Belmont Park
Saturday’s card had 20 horses scratched at Belmont, and Sunday will be cloudy in the afternoon with periods of rain later in the day heading to Halloween on Monday. The chance of rain is 70% with high 60’s temperatures greeting the horses and jockeys. The $100,000 Pumpkin Pie Stakes is race 5 and 9 fillies and mares are scheduled to sprint 6 furlongs.
With tricks and treats on deck, we’ll try to spook the favorite and look at some long shots to be running down the lane and fill our bag with candy and cash.
We’ll try to beat the 8-5 favorite Stonetastic, who is the speed of speed and will be leading from the start to the far turn. She’s finished first or second in six of her last seven starts and yielded the lead in her last 6 furlong race in the Thoroughbred Club of America (G2) at Keeneland. She was caught in the stretch to finish nearly 2-lengths back as the 6-5 favorite.
Fusaichi Red (12-1) will get overlooked here after finishing last in the Gallant Bloom (G2) last out on a wet and muddy track. She’s a late runner who won an allowance race her in July at 6 furlongs going from last to first with a big move down the lane. A strong pace sets up well for another closing kick at a price.
She’s Hot Wired (20-1) cuts back in distance and will also benefit from a faster pace. She has 40 races under her belt won a minor stakes in September at Charles Town going gate to wire. In tougher her up front with Stonetastic, but the price is prohibitive and worth a look.
Let’s Parlay (8-1) is an aptly named runner who we will include in our Halloween handicap and wagering. She’s won 4 times with 3 seconds in 9 starts with eight of those at Monmouth. Her latest race was a win at Parx where she settled inside and came off the pace to win. Jockey Jose Lezcano will try to give her a similar ride breaking from the outside in post 8 and move her inside to save ground for a late run.
Get in on the betting action as Belmont’s 38-day run and Fall Meet concludes with the Pumpkin Pie Stakes at 3:07 ET. The final stakes race of the meet is race 8 – the $100,000 Chelsey Flower for 2-year-old fillies going 1 mile on the turf.
